Georgetown hit by deafening thunderstorms

Georgetown was this morning raked with heavy rain, deafening thunder claps and blinding flashes of lightning.
The storms started at around 4.30 am and continued up to around 7 am. Several parts of the city also lost power during the storms which were accompanied by high winds. There are no reports yet of any damage.
Volatile weather has yielded similar phenomena in Trinidad and Barbados in recent days. There was severe flash flooding in several parts of Trinidad yesterday.
There was no warning yesterday to the Guyanese public of severe weather approaching even though a Doppler radar funded by the European Union at great cost is supposed to be providing notice of severe weather systems.
