City Chamber urges assenting of local gov’t bills

Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Clinton Urling says that the Chhamber is looking forward to President Donald Ramotar assenting to four local government bills passed nearly a month now.

He was speaking over the weekend at the launching of the Chamber’s business directory.

Urling said “It has been nearly a month now since the four legislations that pave the way for local government elections were passed in Parliament. However, for many confounding, perplexing reasons, the President has not yet assented to those bills. The Chamber looks forward to those bills being assented to so that in 2014 we can finally see the return of local democracy in our beloved country, which has not occurred since 1994.”

The government has given several different excuses for why the President has not yet made a decision on the bills. The latest is that the President has to say that he is ready to receive the bills from the AG’s Chambers for consideration. This particular explanation has been lampooned in legal circles.
