UN counter-terrorism experts for visit

The Ministry of Home Affairs today said that seven experts from the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate will be visiting Guyana from Monday 7th October 2013 to Tuesday 8th October 2013.

A release from the Ministry of Home Affairs said that the team will undertake an assessment of Guyana’s efforts in the implementation of the United Nations Resolution 1373 “Anti-Terrorism: Calling for Suppressing Financing, Improving International Cooperation”.

The team comprises:

Weixiong Chen – Deputy Director of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED)

Elisabeth Joyce – Section Chief, CTED, Coordinator of delegation

Sue Takasu – CTED Senior Legal Officer

Enrique Ochoa – Committee Expert from ‘1540 Committee’

Henrik Juhl Madsen – Associate Professional Officer, Maritime Security and Facilitation, Maritime Safety Division

Yuen Chi-Kin Luke – Interpol Officer

David Alamos Martinez – Terrorism Prevention expert, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime

The visit will begin with an opening session at 0900 hours on Monday 7th October 2013 at the Guyana Police Force Officers Training Centre.  Clement Rohee MP, Minister of Home Affairs will deliver the feature address.

The release said that the team will meet with senior Government officials as well as officials from the law enforcement Agencies.

Legislation meant to prevent the financing of terrorism stalled in the last session of Parliament after the government and the opposition collided over the content of the bill and the timetable for its passing.
