GPL apologises for extended blackouts in city

The Guyana Power and Light Inc today apologised for the extended outage experienced by its customers within South Ruimveldt Gardens, Roxanne Burnham Gardens and East & West Ruimveldt areas yesterday.

A release from GPL said that this was due to unforeseen technical difficulties experienced by technicians while reconfiguring the network in preparation for commissioning of the New Georgetown (North Ruimveldt) Substation in November. GPL said its technicians worked throughout the evening and power was restored to all areas at 23:00hrs.

The New Georgetown (North Ruimveldt) Substation is one of seven new substations under GPL’s Infrastructure Development Project which is aimed at improving the quality of electricity supplied, system stability, improved voltage regulation, and reduction of technical losses.
