Trainee cop accused of burning colleague with iron

A trainee policeman was yesterday charged with assault after allegedly using a hot iron to burn a fellow officer.

Alwin Jones, Police Constable 220022, of Lot 1898 Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It was alleged that on September 27, at the Felix Austin Police College, he unlawfully assaulted Police Constable 21976 Linford Beete, so as to cause him actual body harm.

According to prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambujue, on September 27, Beete asked Jones to borrow his clothing iron. Jones, he said, refused to loan his iron to Beete, which led to a confrontation during which Jones placed the still hot iron on Beete’s back while it was still on.

Rambujue said that Beete was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for his injuries and the matter was reported, which led to Jones being arrested and charge.

Magistrate Azore granted $25,000 bail and the case was adjourned to October 14, when it will be called in Court One.
