GPL apologises for extended city blackouts

The Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) yesterday apologised for the extended outage experienced by its customers within South Ruimveldt Gardens, Roxanne Burnham Gardens and East & West Ruimveldt areas on Thursday, which it blamed on technical difficulties.

In a press release, GPL said technicians had been reconfiguring the network in preparation for the commissioning of the New Georgetown (North Ruimveldt) Substation in November when they encountered difficulties. Technicians worked throughout the evening and power was restored to all areas by 11pm.

The new substation is one of seven being developed under GPL’s Infrastructure Development Project which aims to improve the quality of electricity supplied, system stability, voltage regulation and reduce technical losses.

GPL apologised for the extended outage and also encouraged customers to check its website www.gplinc. com to view its line maintenance schedule.
