Infrastructure projects commissioned in Region Nine

Local Government Minister Ganga Persaud on Saturday commissioned three key infrastructure projects that will augment the delivery of health care and education in Region Nine.

A former nursery school and then storage bond converted into a six-apartment building in Lethem, at a cost of $8.9 million, was among the facilities commissioned.

The building will provide housing for health care staff, a report from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.

The Amerindian Hostel at Lethem which was renovated to include a conference room in the bottom flat at a cost of $4.5 million was also opened on Saturday. The facility will be used for training workshops and meetings by toshaos visiting the area. Persaud also commissioned the fence erected around the Arapaima Primary School at a cost of $1.6 million. The projects were all executed under the region’s 2013 capital budget, GINA said.

The minister also checked on the progress of several ongoing education programmes being executed in the region under the 2013 budget. These include the rehabilitation of the St Ignatius Secondary School’s science laboratory, and plant nursery and the sanitary block at the Arapaima school. The latter project is 95% completed.
