A French Guiana national was yesterday fined $30,000 for illegally entering the country after turning himself into the police when he discovered he had no money to get home.
It was alleged that on August 29, at Springlands, Corentyne, Berbice, Brandan Albert Millard, 19, entered Guyana by sea and disembarked without the consent of an immigration officer.
He pleaded guilty to the charge through an interpreter when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court
Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru said that on August 29, Millard entered Guyana at Springlands without presenting himself to an immigration officer.
He said that Millard on October 18 turned himself in at the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost, where he told police officers that he had no money to travel back to French Guiana.
Mangru also said that Millard also informed officers that he had travelled to Guyana to attend a funeral.
When asked whether he had any pending matters or previous convictions, Millard said that he had never had any trouble with the law.
He was subsequently fined $30,000 with an alternative of three months’ imprisonment.
