Case dismissed against wife accused of causing bodily harm

Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday dismissed the case against a Werk-en-Rust woman accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm on her spouse after the man declined to give evidence in the matter.

Carlisa Matthews, of lot 59 Cross Street, Werk-en-Rust was charged with unlawfully inflicting grievous bodily harm on Jermaine Maynard on October 26 at Croal Street, Georgetown. A report was made at the Stabroek police outpost, and the woman was arrested and charged.

Her attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat told the court that the accused and the virtual complainant share a relationship and have been living together for the past 10 years. He also told the court that “the man usually beats [her], so she decided to beat him.”

When called to the witness stand, Maynard, with his left arm in a sling, declined to testify against his wife, resulting in the case being dismissed.
