Affiance woman fined over sale of firecrackers

A woman was yesterday fined $30,000 for selling explosives.

Magistrate Sunil Scarce imposed the fine on Surswattie Wazeer, of Affiance on the Essequibo Coast, when she appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrates’ Court.

According to the charge against Wazeer, on November 1, at Anna Regina Old Market, she had in her possession 139 Sucker Match Scratch, three Thunder Kings and 30 Whistling Thunder for the purpose of selling.

She pleaded guilty and told the court that she was unaware that the firecrackers were dangerous and illegal.

She was fined $30,000 with the alternative of three weeks imprisonment. She was also told by the magistrate to warn other vendors about selling the explosives
