Soldier charged with stealing fellow rank’s BlackBerry

A soldier was yesterday charged with stealing a fellow rank’s phone at army headquarters, Camp Ayanganna.

At the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Ray Smith, 20, pleaded not guilty to the charge while stating that he could not understand why he was in court since the matter was already sorted out at the Police Station.

It was alleged that on October 25, at Camp Ayanganna, Smith, of Lot 99 Fourth Avenue, Subryanville, stole a BlackBerry smartphone, valued $40,000, which was the property of James Samuel.

Bail was not objected to by prosecutor Vishnu Hunt.

However, Samuel then informed the court that he had already dealt with the matter at the police station and added that he did not wish to go any further with the matter.

However, Smith was placed on $60,000 bail by Magistrate Judy Latchman, who fixed the next hearing in the case for November 18, when it will be called at Court 10.
