Pole collision cuts power on East Coast

At approximately 1:45hrs today, a vehicle collided with a utility pole at Coldingen, cutting power to parts of the East Coast.

The Guyana Power and Light today said that the pole carried conductors for the two main feeders supplying the East Coast Demerara, and the incident caused a widespread power outage, affecting consumers from Goedverwagting to Bygeval.

GPL in a statement said:

“Power is being gradually restored to consumers, with those between Goedverwagting and Good Hope being repowered at 07:00hours, and from Good Hope to Buxton at 09:35 hrs. While repairs are affected by the inclement weather, we are working to ensure that power is restored to customers between Buxton and Bygeval Mahaica by 15:00hrs.

“GPL has consistently pleaded with road users to exercise due caution when using the roadways in an effort to avoid incidents of this nature. The Company again renews the call, especially to operators of heavy equipment, to be vigilant when travelling in the vicinity of our network to avoid unnecessary damage(s) to property and inconvenience to our customers.

“GPL apologizes for the inconvenience caused due to today’s unforeseen occurrence.”
