A man is in police custody assisting with investigations into the murder of Brazilian miner Danderlei Kienen who was fatally stabbed during a robbery on Wednesday evening at his Mahdia business place.
The 46-year-old man, who also owned a business at the corner of Regent and Light streets, died before he could receive medical attention at the Mahdia hospital.
Stabroek News was told that the man operated a money transfer business in central Mahdia a short distance from the Mahdia Power and Light (MPL) Company. He was fatally stabbed to his neck once after being robbed by three men around 7:30 on Wednesday evening. Police sources told this newspaper that surveillance footage from the business establishment was retrieved, leading to the arrest one man yesterday.
It is believed that the Brazilian was targeted by the bandits since he had earlier in the day collected a large sum of cash from a Georgetown flight.
In a press release, police stated that Kienen was at his 111 Miles Mahdia business when he was confronted by three men, who were armed with knives.
They demanded cash. During the robbery, he was fatally stabbed and that the perpetrators escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash and gold.
Kienen’s body was brought to the city yesterday on a Roraima Airways chartered flight. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed today.
