No bail for man held over unlawful gun, ammo

Ravi Samaroo was remanded on Friday on charges of having a stolen gun and unlawful ammunition in his possession at Port Kaituma.

Samaroo, 20, of 363 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

According to Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, on November 18, at Port Kaituma, Samaroo had in his possession two rounds of .32 ammunition and five rounds of .32 Taurus pistol ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.

Samaroo was also accused of having possession of a firearm that did not belong to him. The firearm, which is usually lodged by the owner at the El Dorado Mining Company, was reported missing. Samaroo was later contacted at his home and it was subsequently searched and he was also searched and the firearm was allegedly found on his person.

Samaroo was denied bail and the case was transferred to the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court, where it will be called on February 3.
