Lodge man gets 18 months after failed bid to steal handbag

A failed bid to steal a woman’s handbag has landed Lodge resident Kelvin Washington an 18-month residency in prison.

Washington, 33, of Lot 44 Princes Street, Lodge, was sentenced for attempting to commit a felony yesterday after being found guilty by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Magistrate Latchman found Washington guilty of the offence of attempting to commit a felony after a three-month long trial, during which three witnesses testified.

Washington had been accused of attempted larceny from the person. At his arraignment, Prosecutor Seon Blackman said that the intended victim of the crime, Dawn Murray, was walking on the street on August 22 when she felt a hand in her bag and she turned around and saw Washington pulling his hands out of her bag.

Blackman had also said that the woman raised an alarm and a plain clothes police officer in the area at the time responded and arrested Washington.

As Magistrate Latchman handed down the sentence, Washington, who was unrepresented by an attorney, remained silent and showed no emotion.
