Guyanese man drowns, other missing

– swept out to sea while fishing at Tortola

A Guyanese man is dead and another missing after they were swept away while fishing on Sunday on the northern side of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, the BVI news online reported.

The body of Kendeye Thomas was recovered yesterday while persons close to the men have identified the second man as Roger Fraser. Reports suggest that the two men were relatives.

According to the online news site, the search continues for the missing man.

The two men were out fishing on the north shore of Tortola when strong waves reportedly washed them out to sea yesterday. One of the two men had reportedly attempted to assist the other in getting back to safety when a wave took him out to sea as well.

The report said that rescue efforts were attempted by Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) but were abandoned after it grew late and the seas became rough.

According to the report, the police said yesterday that a body had apparently been located near the shoreline, but that recovery and identification would take time because of the fierce sea conditions.
