Amerindian restaurant to be launched next year

Authentic Amerindian cuisine in a restaurant setting will be available in the city come early next year, with a launch set for January 18.

Michael Patterson, one of the five persons behind the venture, told Stabroek News the idea of an authentic Amerindian restaurant had been in the making for the past five years. He said the concept came about from attending the annual Amerindian Heritage month celebrations at the Sophia Exhibition Site and the Umana Yana.

At these events, Patterson said, Amerindian dishes are available for sale. However, these dishes are only available to the public once yearly. Patterson said he decided that something needed to be done so that Amerindian dishes, such as Pepper-Pot and Cassava Bread would be at people’s hand reach on a daily basis.

When asked about a venue for the restaurant, Patterson said that was still up in the air. However, he and his team are working diligently to find a proper location before February 1, when it would be open for business. However, the launching of the restaurant is set for a location at Pike Street, Kitty on January 18.

The plan is to have live bands and skits performed by Guyana’s native people. Arts and crafts will also be on sale and on display when the restaurant opens for business.

He said the restaurant would also aid in tourism development. He added that he intends to create an excellent atmosphere for entertainment and relaxation and offer the best in customer service. Tropical décor will complement the services offered.
