Former Turks and Caicos premier released from Brazilian jail

(Jamaica Gleaner) Former Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands Michael Misick has been released from prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Misick who was arrested in December on a provisional warrant, was released earlier today.

“We understand that the Brazilian Supreme Court has granted him bail,” said Neil Smith, the spokesman for the Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

But he said it does not mean that the legal process against Misick is exhausted.

Misick was arrested on the request of the TCI Special Investigation and Prosecution Team.

The team is investigating issues arising from Sir Robin Auld’s 2008-2009 Commission of Inquiry.

Smith said the TCI prosecutors submitted formal extradition papers on January 28, 2013 within the 60 day time limit.
