Major ganja seizure in T&T forest

(Trinidad Express) Two men were arrested and almost TT$5 million worth of marijuana, together with an authentic United States military bulletproof vest were seized during a major drug bust in the Eastern Division on Friday afternoon.

The seizure was made in a forested area at Chanka Trace, off Bon Road, Guico, Sangre Grande, by a team of officers from the Eastern Division Task Force and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) led by Snr Supt Dianand Naipaul.

Officers said at around 1 p.m., they went into the area based on information they had received and found 24 crocus bags, all together containing in excess of 1,000 pounds of high-grade marijuana. The drugs were said to have a street value of TT$4.7 million.

The vest was found together with the drugs, police said. Officers said the men arrested, ages 21 and 24, were held in close proximity to where the drugs were found.

They were taken to the Sangre Grande Police Station where they remained in custody up to late yesterday evening. The men are expected to be charged and taken before a Sangre Grande magistrate sometime this week, said police.
