Jamaica businessman to stand trial for human trafficking

(Jamaica Gleaner) Indian businessman Rajesh Gurunani who is accused of human trafficking is to stand trial on December 2.

The date was set yesterday in the Home Circuit Court.

The businessman, who operates stores in Kingston and St Catherine, is also facing the charge of withholding passports.

It’s alleged that Mr. Gurunani recruited persons from India and promised them jobs in his stores in Jamaica.

It’s further alleged that on their arrival in Jamaica the businessman confiscated their passports and forced them to work long hours in his stores for little pay.

Mr. Gurunani has denied the allegations.

He was charged in March 2011 during an operation by the Organised Crime Investigation Division.
