Directors of Jamaica company charged with beef fraud

(Jamaica Gleaner) Caribbean Producers Jamaica Limited (CPJ) and two of its directors were brought before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday on allegations of fraudulently importing beef into the island.

Charged with various counts of obtaining goods by forged documents, uttering forged documents and forgery are Thomas Tyler, Mark Hart and Caribbean Producers Jamaica Limited.

Caribbean Producers is being represented by attorney-at-law Peter Champagnie while Tyler and Hart are being represented by attorney-at-law Deborah Martin.

The Crown is alleging that the company had initially indicated that it was importing beef tenderloin but it was later discovered that another kind of beef, was instead imported.

It was pointed out that the meat, identified as beef head, is not sanctioned by the Veterinarian Services Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

It is further being alleged that the documents used in the importation of meat were fraudulent.

The matter is scheduled to come before the court again on December 5.
