No feasibility study on new Demerara Harbour Bridge

General Manager of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) Rawlston Adams says that no feasibility study has been conducted into the construction of a second Demerara Harbour Bridge.

Adams’ remarks were made yesterday to Stabroek News in an effort to provide clarification on the status of the new bridge’s progress, after the Guyana Chronicle reported that the Ministry of Public Works had completed a feasibility study for the new bridge.

The report, which was based on a press briefing held at the ministry last Friday, stated that “a feasibility study into the study of a new Demerara River Bridge has been completed and it has been determined that the best site is close to the existing bridge.”

Adams acknowledged that a site close to the first bridge was identified as a possible location; there are, however, several other sites which are also under consideration.

He said that he was oblivious as to where the Guyana Chronicle received its information since neither he nor Transport Minister Robeson Benn or any other ministry official mentioned anything about a feasibility study.

Adams stated that Minister Benn did say that the Transport Ministry is working on a proposal for a new Demerara River crossing, but maintained that there was never any mention of a feasibility study of any kind.
