Sixth edition of ‘Guyana Where and What’ guide launched

The sixth edition of “Guyana Where and What,” a tour guide pocket book, was officially launched on Friday at the Ministry of Tourism on South Road.
The tour guide was published by General Executive Management Services Inc (GEMS Inc) and compiled by Gem Madhoo-Nascimento and Kit Nascimento.

According to a statement from the ministry, acting Tourism Minister Irfaan Ali congratulated the Madhoo-Nascimento for finding the time to put together another edition of the publication, which he expected would significantly enhance the tourism sector by providing much needed information to Guyanese and tourists. “We at the ministry have no difficulty in supporting this initiative as we recognise the far reaching benefits and extensive coverage this book receives,” he was quoted as saying.

Ali added that the guide will be used as a marketing tool internationally and will complement other local publications, such as Guyana Tourism Authority’s (GTA) monthly newsletter, the Explore Guyana magazine and the recently conceptualised Invest Guyana magazine, which will have its primary focus on the tourism sector.

The statement said he also highlighted the “pull factor” of the contents of the publication, which encourages the readers to come to Guyana and experience the rich culture and attractions. He explained that this guide goes into the historical context in a simple but effective manner that attracts visitors.

Also at the launch, was acting President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) Daniel Gajie who congratulated the publisher for sustaining the publication for six editions.  “This is another example of the private sector producing an important marketing tool for Guyana to complement the government’s efforts and shows that our partnership is working,” he said.

According to Madhoo-Nascimento, 20,000 copies of the pocket book have been printed. She pointed out that this edition had fewer pages but a number of additions, including a pullout map of Georgetown.  It features locations and contacts of favourite hot spots, restaurants, banks, supermarkets and hospitals.

The guide is available at the Tourism Ministry, the GTA, the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, from THAG members, and at hotels and restaurants locally, the statement added.
