Ali also said the preliminary costs of basic infrastructural works in the area is estimated at $90M and that the ministry is awaiting funds from the 2013 budgetary allocations to proceed with these works. According to a press release, beneficiaries will be able to pay a subsidised cost of $72,000 for lots in that area.

“The cost of regularization is expensive but we have [assessed] the situation and now you are paying one of the lowest fees as we try to bridge the gap,” Ali told the meeting.

The overall subsidization cost per lot amounts to $700,000, the bulk of which will be paid by the ministry. In this regard, Ali cautioned residents that not all areas within the community can be regularised as some lots are in dispute while some may be unoccupied.

According to the release, the regularization of 86 out of 166 lots in Barnwell North will bring with it the basic infrastructural services such as roads and drains, to the residents therein.

Community Development Facilitator, Chaflin Velloza reminded residents that they will have to make full payments for their lots. Velloza also urged them to adhere to the rules governing the process.

The owners of the 86 lots were given their offer letters and were advised to complete the payment process to uplift their titles. On receipt of his letter, one recipient, Dwayne Jordan said, “…I have been waiting for years. I am happy that my family will be able to benefit from this. I want to say thank you to everyone who made this letter.”

The ministry, through the Central Housing and Planning Authority began interventions in Barnwell North in 2008, the release said.
