The GDF Coast Guard and MARAD on Tuesday detained the fishing trawler, the MV Sujam32 which was observed to be listing heavily while putting out to sea.
In a press statement, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) said the move was in keeping with the Coast Guard’s remit of ensuring that seagoing vessels comply with maritime safety regulations since breaches of such regulations could endanger the lives of those aboard the vessels.
The army said the vessel’s documentation was inspected and a statement given by its captain Anant Ram Sooknanan regarding the nature of the list. Following subsequent correction of the list the vessel was allowed to depart.
