Shot dancer recovering

Rayon Baird, the dancer who was shot in his right chest during an attempted robbery in ‘A’ Field Sophia last week, is improving as he still awaits surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital to repair his punctured lung and to remove the lodged bullet.

Baird, 24, a choreographer of the Unique Arts Dance School, who has a tube in his chest to drain the fluid from his lungs, said he was attacked around 8.30 pm while he and a female dancer were heading home.

He said that just as two men on bicycles rode up behind them, his phone alarmed and he quickly tried to put it his pocket.

“I told her let us hurry up because it might be a robbery,” Baird said. Then, “I heard one of them say shoot he because he ain’t gon give we nothing and I pushed her and told her to run. Then they shot me and I plunged into the trench.”

Baird said the men made good their escape on the bicycles and he went to a nearby house and begged for assistance. He said no one came out to assist him, but after a couple of minutes he managed to get a car to take him to the hospital.

Baird said he had never seen the men prior to the incident.

He added the police have since taken statements.
