Five held over Golden Grove taxi driver murder

As a result of diligent work by the police, about five men were recently arrested in connection with the May 2012 murder of taxi driver Rajendra Puran and it is believed that they are all part of a carjacking ring, according to Crime Chief Seelall Persaud.

Persaud did not go into details as the investigation is ongoing. He told Stabroek News that police were able to arrest the suspects based on information they were provided with. He stressed that they had been working on the information for some time.

Shortly after Puran’s body was discovered bludgeoned in a street at Enmore, East Coast Demerara, Persaud had said that investigators were “looking for persons he is usually associated with; persons known to the police.”

While the man’s death had the appearance of a carjacking gone horribly wrong, the crime chief had said that the evidence suggested otherwise.

The father of two had left his Lot 1296 Section ‘C’ Block ‘Y’ Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara home around 9 pm on May 2 for the Diamond car park, from where he usually operated his private car. No one knows what happened thereafter.

After he did not return home, worried relatives informed police and information was subsequently received that an unidentified body was found at Logwood, Enmore. Checks confirmed their worst fears.

Puran had visible injuries to his head. A post-mortem examination revealed that he died as a result of strangulation and blunt trauma to the head.
His car, a white Toyota Raum, was missing.
