Speeding stolen Tundra ploughs into group after cricket game

Three men are now hospitalised after they were struck down by a speeding Toyota Tundra, which has since been reported stolen, outside the Better Hope Community Centre Ground on Saturday night.

Hospitalised are Premraj Ram, 17, of lot 51 First Street, Foulis, East Coast Demerara; Bharrat Singh, 21, of Success Housing Scheme and Mahesh Singh of Third Street, Success Housing Scheme.

Ram’s mother, Linda Jailall, told Stabroek News yesterday that on Saturday, her son was at the community centre ground; standing alongside the road when he was struck by a Toyota Tundra.

Jailall said she received a call from one of his friends about 11.30 pm, explaining that he and eight others were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The shaken mother said she and other relatives immediately travelled to the city and saw Ram in the emergency unit bleeding from his head and nose.

She said eyewitnesses related that the Tundra was allegedly being driven by a 17-year-old who apparently lost control of the vehicle and ran over a number of persons who were on the road waiting for transportation.

Ram sustained a fractured spine and minor injuries to his body.

Bharrat Singh’s sister, Indranie Singh, said that her brother had just finished playing a game of cricket at the ground and was sitting outside waiting for a taxi to head home.

Indranie Singh said her brother was the first to be hit, landing him under the vehicle while others jumped in a nearby trench.

She said she subsequently received a call from her husband, who was at the scene, notifying her that Bharrat Singh was being rushed to the hospital.

She said when family members arrived at the hospital Bharrat Singh was in an unconscious state and revived a couple of hours after. He sustained a broken leg and deep lacerations about his body.

Mahesh Singh’s wife Kavita Singh said that when she received the news of the accident, she was unable to leave home because of her one-year-old daughter.

Mahesh Singh, who plays for the Success Challengers cricket team, said, “I don’t know what happen. Everything happened so quickly and all I wake and see I been in the hospital.”

Kavita said that although she was worried about her husband’s condition, she was thankful that he survived the accident.

However, her husband’s valuables including his gold jewellery, cellular phone and $9,000 had disappeared.

The three men are all patients in the Male Surgical Ward of the GPH.

A police source told this newspaper that the owner of the vehicle was taken into custody and released after he explained that someone had stolen his vehicle while he was at Palm Court.

An investigation has been launched.
