Vreed-en-Hoop businesswoman waylaid at traffic lights, robbed of $6.3M and gold

The police say that at about 1640h today, businesswoman Shireen Sheik, 26 years, of Vreed-en-Hoop, WCD, was in a motor vehicle which had stopped at the traffic lights at Turkeyen Railway Embankment, ECD, when she and the driver were confronted by two men, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

Police say that the men rode up on a motor cycle which they threw in front of the motor car, held up the businesswoman and then took away a bag containing $6.3M, a quantity of raw gold and documents. The perpetrators then held up the driver of a motor car that was proceeding along the roadway and took away the vehicle in which they fled the scene.  The driver of the escape vehicle however lost control of the vehicle which ended up in a canal at Liliendaal along the Railway Embankment.

One of the suspects was arrested by a traffic rank who was on motor cycle patrol in the vicinity at the time, but the other perpetrator managed to flee, police said.

Investigations are continuing.
