Pouderoyen woman dies on journey to funeral

A woman died yesterday in an accident on the Walton Hall Public Road, Essequibo Coast, while travelling with others to a funeral.

Dead is Banmattie Persaud, 28 years, of Lot 47 Bella Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Suddie Hospital.

According to the police, Imran Ali, the driver of a canter, bearing licence plate GDD 7614, was proceeding along the roadway, allegedly at a fast rate, with 20 persons in the tray of the vehicle. They were on their way to a funeral.
While negotiating a turn, the driver lost control of the vehicle which turned turtle, police said, adding that all the occupants in the tray of the canter received injuries and were taken to the Suddie Hospital.

Some of the injured included the driver Ali, Kamlawattie Sukhai, Basmattie Sukhram, Maya Ali, Yashoda Sookram and Sookranie Nirda, who were all taken for medical attention.
The driver of the vehicle is currently in police custody.
