Man dies after confrontation with bus conductor over loud music

Police say that at about 1745h. yesterday, Basdeo Mangra , 52 years, of North Vryheid’s Lust, ECD, and his wife, were on their way to Georgetown in a route 44 mini-bus in which loud music was being played.

The volume of the music was affecting Mangra’s wife and he asked the mini-bus conductor to turn down the volume, a statement from the police said today. This request was made several times but to no avail as the conductor and the driver refused to lower the volume, police said.

An argument developed between Mangra and the conductor who was armed with an
ice-pick and a scuffle between the two men ensued in the vehicle, police added.

The driver then stopped the vehicle in the vicinity of Kitty and ordered Mangra and his wife out of the vehicle and drove away, police said.

The couple was later in another mini-bus enroute to West Demerara when Mangra complained of feeling unwell. He was taken in the vehicle to the GPHC where he was pronounced DOA, police added.

The conductor of the route 44 mini-bus is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
