Labourer charged with Essequibo River murder

The man accused of killing a miner in a drinking row at an Essequibo River location, was remanded to prison after being arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on the capital charge yesterday.
The allegation against Basdeo (only name given), called “Papo,” 44, is that on June 17, he murdered Caesar Bradford.

The labourer was not required to plead to charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, before whom he appeared and Prosecutor Bharat Mangru made an application for him to be remanded to prison.

The matter will be called again on June 24.

Police in a release said that Bradford, 32, of Bagotville, West Bank Demerara, was stabbed to his abdomen during an argument with the accused at St. Mary’s, Essequibo River. He succumbed to his injuries while a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

Eunice Bradford, the deceased’s grandmother, had told Stabroek News that her grandson worked in the interior as a miner.
