told Stabroek News that it was the “first time in history” that CPGs groups were ever honoured by an SMC.

The SMC got the idea to recognize the groups “because their presence in the area has helped to reduce crime.” The awards would help to motivate the members to work harder.

Ramlakhan hopes that members of other SMCs would recognize the groups in their districts as well.

The event was attended by president of the ‘B’ Division CPG, Krishna Seelall, liaison officer, Narine Chattergoon and vice-president of the SMC, Fazal Habibullah.

Meanwhile, he lauded the efforts of the SMC that has donated a printer to the station so ranks would no longer have to resort to the use of a typewriter.

The group had also seen the establishment of a canteen at the station that has multi-purpose use. The canteen not only sells snacks and beverages to the police and the public, but it provides shelter from the elements.

It is also used as a training centre and for domino competitions among ranks and the public.

The competition is seen as a way of “bridging the gap” among the two parties and of attracting a number of off-duty officers who would be easily accessible in the event of major occurrences.
