Two years for judgemental jewel thief

Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday handed down a two-year prison sentence to Brian Benjamin, who was found guilty of robbing a woman of her jewellery after telling her that it looked “nasty.”

The decision came at the end of his trial for robbery at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The charge against Benjamin stated that on January 4, at Georgetown, he robbed Shenelle Grant of a gold chain, a gold band and US$20, totalling $214,000.

Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru stated that Grant was walking along Camp Street and Brickdam when Benjamin approached and told her that her gold jewellery was “nasty.”
Mangru said that the man then relieved the woman of her jewellery and escaped in a taxi.

The court heard from the prosecutor that Grant saw Benjamin on January 27 at the East Coast bus park and pointed him out to a police in the vicinity as the man who had robbed her of her belongings on January 4.

Benjamin was subsequently arrested and charged

Benjamin had pleaded not guilty to the charge when he was first arraigned on April 30 and was remanded to prison.

The matter subsequently went to trial, which commenced on July 8, continued on July 9 and ended yesterday when the court found Benjamin guilty.
