Four years for gold band robbery

A 27-year-old man who robbed a woman of her gold band was last Friday sentenced to four years imprisonment after being found guilty of the offence at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Magistrate Ann McLennan who presided over the matter handed down the ruling to Kevin Maloney at the conclusion of a trial at which he was found guilty.

The May 8th charge against Maloney stated that at Stabroek Market he robbed Merissa Parris of one gold band valued $80,000.

The 178 East Ruimveldt resident had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge when he was first arraigned on May 9. A trial was subsequently conducted into the matter.

The prosecution’s facts stated that on the day in question the complainant was walking along Water Street when the defendant accosted her and snatched the band off her hand, after which he made good his escape.

Prosecutor Bharat Mangru said that the complainant raised an alarm and the defendant was pursued by public-spirited citizens.

The band was found in Maloney’s pants pocket.
