$15,000 fine for using ganja to treat asthma

Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday imposed a $15,000 fine and community service on a man who admitted to having two grammes of cannabis in his possession to treat symptoms of asthma.
According to the police’s case, on August 10, 37-year-old Noel Mitchell of Lot 402 North/East La Penitence had two grammes of cannabis in his possession. He told the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court that he uses the narcotic to treat symptoms of asthma.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that police ranks on patrol in the said area, around 3pm, searched Mitchell and found two small Ziploc bags containing the narcotic in his mouth.
He said that Mitchell begged the officers to give him a chance but he was arrested and charged.

In addition to the $15,000 fine, the court ordered Mitchell to complete three weeks of community service or the alternative of eight months imprisonment.
