Man charged over assault of guard, cop at Demico House

A man was yesterday arraigned on three charges when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Ian De Barros, 35, of Lot 77 Roxanne Burnham Gardens, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, charged with unlawfully assaulting Areaba Charles, and using abusive language towards her. On the same day he allegedly unlawfully assaulted Police Constable Darwin Eastman. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

It is alleged that on September 8, at Demico House, De Barros was in the company of others consuming alcohol. As he was leaving Charles told him he could not take the bottle he was drinking from off the premises and this reportedly annoyed him.

The court was told that De Barros then chucked Charles, who was employed by the business establishment as a security guard, several times and verbally abused her.

This attracted the attention of Constable Eastman, who was performing his duty in plain clothes, and he intervened. It was alleged that De Barros then pulled on the shirt of the peace officer causing it to tear in the process.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford did not object to bail.

De Barros was placed on self-bail. He is to return to court on September 23.
