Sterling Products adding IT to staff literacy programme

-14 graduate from latest course

Sterling Products Limited (SPL) has announced plans to augment its Literacy Staff Development Programme with information technology courses, even as it celebrated the success of 14 employees who graduated recently.

In a press release, CEO Ramsay Ali said the company has worked continuously to empower its employees through training programmes and over the last few years it has focused on enhancing literacy among via Mathematics and English courses. However, SPL will be introducing a computer course from next year which is important “in a world of rapidly evolving technology that directly impacts efficiency in the workplace.”

Commenting on the impact of the programme, Gouslyn Williams, an Operator 2 at SPL and one of this year’s graduates said he is thankful for the opportunity to improve his literacy skills.

Speaking on behalf of the graduates, employee Jasoda Tulsie said, “We wish to assure all the relevant persons who have contributed to this programme that we will use these skills for further development in the organisation and our personal lives.”

Marcel Hutson, Deputy Chief Education Officer, in his address to the graduates said SPL is one of the few companies that he is aware of “that is taking this time-out to educate its staff.

“It is great to see that this company has recognised the importance of literacy particularly as we observe Education Month with emphasis on transforming classrooms for the 21st century,” he said. Hutson encouraged the graduates to continue to strive for excellence.

“I want to charge you to not be afraid to dive into the deep. Always remember that integrity is very critical to success… Integrity and character will determine how far you can go in life,” he said. Hutson further pledged the ministry’s continued support to SPL’s education initiative and hoped that other companies will emulate their example.
