Conductor fined for threatening, assaulting wife

An 18-year-old bus conductor was fined yesterday after pleading guilty to threatening and assaulting his common-law wife.

Sherwin Rodney, of 4444 Mekdeci Housing Scheme, North Ruimveldt, admitted threatening Nicola Landon with a cutlass and choking her when he appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecution’s case was that he committed the offences on October 5, during a misunderstanding and that Landon managed to escape and report what had happened to the police. Rodney was then arrested.

A visibly repentant Rodney gripped the rails in the dock when the magistrate asked him if he accepted the prosecutor’s statement, to which he agreed.  He was fined $20,000 for the threat and another $20,000 for assault.

Meanwhile, another man was also arraigned before the court for unlawfully assaulting his wife. The prosecution stated that on October 6, at Lot 390 North East La Penitence, Vernon Rodrigues came home to his wife Yonnette Rodrigues, with whom he was not on speaking terms, and knocked on the door. His wife, at first refused to open the door and when she did the accused pushed the door into her face, resulting in a fight.

The accused strongly challenged the prosecutor’s account statement and pleaded not guilty to the charge. Rodrigues, who shares two children with his wife, was granted $15,000 bail and is scheduled to reappear in court on October 21, when the case will be called again.
