A mother and daughter are facing charges of fraud after they allegedly falsely swore about information on a property that they are accused of inhabiting illegally.
Kim Roach and Samantha Roach, both of 34 Middle Street, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, were both supposed to appear yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to face charges of fraud.
However, Samantha Roach was the only one present. Her mother, Kim Roach, has reportedly migrated.
According to Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, the defendants had been occupying a plot of land in Pouderoyen belonging to a David Hunt, who subsequently served the women a removal notice. However, they did not comply. After the women’s refusal, Hunt filed a motion with the High Court, Mangru told the court.
It is further alleged that on June 11, the defendants falsely swore to an affidavit in defence and stated that they were tenants on the land.
However, when they were asked to supply receipts, they had none. They later claimed that they were the owners of the land.
Prosecutor Mangru objected to bail based on the seriousness of the crime. He also stated that the present defendant would most likely not return to court if granted bail.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry granted Samantha Roach, who was not required to plead to the charge, $125,000 bail and ordered her to lodge her passport and report to a police station every Friday.
Roach is to return on January 20 for further reports and statements.
