I join with Mr Patrick in his expression of gratitude for the reopening of the Agricola Post Office (SN, January 6). Minister Rohee must be congratulated for placing a police outpost above the Post Office building within its enclosed compound.
However, I would respectfully suggest to the Minister that the police at that outpost can also render a greater service in saving lives and injuries to the residents and schoolchildren who live and traverse either side of the eastern and western carriageway between Houston and Providence. Vehicles travel with impunity on both carriageways at speeds of 80-90 km per hour in that highly built-up area. The speed limit between Houston and Craig on the East Bank of Demerara is 50km per hour.
The police can now use their radar guns from their outpost to bring those drivers to justice who now exceed the speed limit with impunity, and curb their disrespect and disregard for the law and the lives and injuries suffered by citizens.
Not far away south of the police outpost on the western carriageway opposite the SOL gas station there is a large area of oil dangerously left after servicing two or three large bush trucks on the said area; I saw a motor cyclist skid and lose control at the same oil patch although serious injury was averted.
