There should be affordable housing where pensioners can rent an apartment

Dear Editor,

Traditionally, the new year is a time for reflection, stock-taking, resolutions and expectations. 2013 was greeted with the usual fanfare of merry-making and solemn worship.

One politician in Guyana suggested that this should be the year of the youth and in accordance with United Nations policy this year is sure to have a designation. All this is very good but what is more important is that whatever is planned should be brought to fruition.

In Guyana there is high expectation in the minds of all and sundry for everyone looks forward to improvement. The elderly, especially the most vulnerable, surely would welcome a better deal before they close their eyes.

Pensions need to have more spending power and this means the Guyana dollar must increase in value. Old age heralds all sorts of problems: health, housing, and financial. Certainly with our vast mineral and other valuable resources, we can provide a better standard of living for our senior citizens just like some of the other Caricom territories.

Let us hope that affordable housing will be established whereby pensioners can rent an apartment and live for the rest of their lives.

Yours faithfully,
Malcolm Maynard
