Unsuitable appointment

Dear Editor,

I read with great concern the appointment of Charles R Ramson, Sr as Commissioner of Information. This to my mind is yet another mistake by the PPPC administration in a move to provide jobs for the boys.

Mr Ramson is said to be arrogant and some  feel that he is incompetent. It is said that he failed as acting Attorney General and then went to the Court of Appeal, later going back as confirmed Attorney General, thus making a mockery of the separation of powers.

I was amazed when the country’s second highest award ‒ the Order of Roraima (OR) ‒ was bestowed on him, and persons of the calibre of Hugh Cholomondeley who placed broadcasting in Guyana on the regional and international map was overlooked for any national award.

It is well known that the former attorney general has an ‘attitude.’ According to the Cabinet Secretary the Commissioner of Information has considerable powers and no doubt would have to meet with members of the public.

His appointment is a glaring example of another case of ‘jobs for the boys.’ Late advisor to the President, Reepu Daman Persaud was paid as an advisor for a number of years
while he was ill, while Harripersaud Nokta and another former minister have been retained as
advisors at fantastic salaries.

I have no doubt that Mr Ramson will be paid a hefty salary despite his pension. Can our country afford this?

Yours faithfully,
Oscar Ramjeet
