A change of the Old Guard in tennis?

Dear Editor,

Day 3 of Wimbledon 2013 will be remembered as a special day in history when so many unpredictable events took place.

First it was my favourite male player Federer who was clearly outplayed by an unknown Ukrainian ranked No 116, but his interview was a humble one and I wish him well.

Next it was third seed Sharapova, who walked out off the court beaten by a Portuguese, Michelle Larcher de Brito, ranked 131st.

Add to these upsets a young man in dreadlocks (who was not mentioned in the printed media) named  Dustin Brown, a Jamaican with a German mother who also knocked out one-time Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt. His elegance on the court was cat like, coupled with big serves and beautiful drop shots. And lastly, don’t forget Nadal’s loss on Day 2 along with the several injuries which have reduced the male tournament to possible finalists Djokovic and Murray.

Are we seeing a change of the Old Guard?

Yours faithfully,
V O Patrick
