Opposition’s caution on Amaila entirely justified

Dear Editor,

Given the recent, worrying revelations of financial analysts Mr Ramon Gaskin and Mr Christopher Ram, it appears that the opposition’s caution regarding the Amaila Falls Hydro Project was entirely justified.

These well respected financial experts have highlighted numerous problems in the monetary arrangements relating to the project. One may wonder what a similar assessment on the technical side would reveal. In sharp contrast to the vague, superficial and often contradictory statements given by government, the Ram/Gaskin analysis was specific, consistent and easily understood even by me, a layman in such matters.

In light of this and other information, the Guyanese people should be very concerned. We should demand that our leaders address the specific issues. We will not be satisfied with more personal attacks against Mr Ram and Mr Gaskin; we need answers to the serious questions raised.

At this time the parliamentary opposition would be justified in going beyond caution. I would urge our elected representatives in the APNU and the AFC to fundamentally re-examine the project in its entirety.

So far the opposition parties have handled this matter well. We expect them to continue to do so in the interest of all Guyanese.

Yours faithfully,
Mark DaCosta
