GBL looking to participate in 2013 Pan American U-15 baseball tourney

The newly formed Guyana Baseball League (GBL) is preparing to participate in the Pan American Under-15 tournament this year and is looking to recruit players to fill 20 spots on four representative teams, a press from the GBL has stated.

Robin Singh of the GBL told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the Pan American U-15 tournament will be held in Colombia in either June or August as the dates have not yet been finalized.

According to the release, the players selected players will participate in a series of practice games later this month and early next month which will be followed by the commencement of the GBL league competition in March and April prior to the national U-15 team competing in the Pan-American championships.

The release stated that the Pan-American tournament is a qualification for the world U-15 tournament which will be run by the governing body for baseball the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) next year.

Singh said the GBL is affiliated to the IBAF having paid its registration dues.

Only persons born on or after January 1, 1996 to December 31, 1998, will be eligible to play in the U-15 competitions.

Practice sessions or tryouts will be held at the GBL’s ground at Turkeyen this Saturday and Sunday and also the following weekend.

Singh said that the tryouts will commence at 10am and last until 5pm.

He also said that there will also be a softball match against a team from The United States of America Embassy this weekend.

Players are requested to wear appropriate sport clothing, while equipment will be provided.

The tryouts will involve catching the baseball, 60-yard sprints, infield/outfield fielding drills and batting practice and the GBL is urging interested persons along with their parents to avail themselves of this opportunity to participate in the sport.
