Demerara 64 shy of first innings honours against Essequibo

Demerara were 64 runs adrift of first innings points against Essequibo yesterday at stumps on Day One after their bowlers again displayed exceptional talent at the Everest Cricket Ground.

Essequibo managed to take three wickets, but face a stiff task in keeping their Guyana Cricket Board senior Inter-County Four-Day fixture alive today.
Essequibo batted first and made 167 all-out off 48.3 overs. Norman and Royan Fredericks resisted for just 3.2 overs before Norman was dismissed by Kellon Carmichael for 12 with the score on 21, after which Carmichael removed Royan for seven with the score on 32.

Ricardo Adams and Dillon Heyliger put together 26 before Adams (18) became Carmichael’s third victim. Heyliger was removed with the score on 71 by Robin Bacchus for 20, and Essequibo were in trouble when they lost two wickets with the score on 95.

Wayne Osbourne (6) was dismissed by Amir Khan, and Herell Greene (23) was leg-before-wicket (lbw) to Zaheer Mohamed. Khan then removed Kenzo Baksh for four with the score on 112, before Anthony Adams and Vijay Surujpaul compiled a 47-run partnership to take Essequibo past the 150 mark.

Essequibo were dismissed after 48.3 overs at a 2.28pm for just 167 with Surujpaul being last out for 40 (4X4) and Adams’ 25(3X4, 1X6) being the next highest scorer. Totaram Bishun mopped up the tail to finish with three for 28, and Kellon Carmichael had three for 35, while Amir Khan took two for 32, Robin Bacchus one for 12 and Zaheer Mohamed one for 19.

Demerara were given a solid platform by the opening pair of Robin Bacchus and Rajendra Chandrika. The two compiled 66 in 17.1 overs in assured fashion until Bacchus became the first of three batsmen to be lbw. He was dismissed by Royan Fredericks for 35 (6X4). Soon after his departure, Chandrika went for 28(3X4), leg- before-wicket to Anthony Adams.

Shemroy Barrington reached 19 (1X4) before he too was lbw to Adams with the score on 97, after which Vishal Singh (6 not-out) and Chanderpaul Hemraj (three not-out) saw Demerara through to close of play with little fuss. Adams has so far taken two for 26 and Royan Fredericks was miserly with one for six from seven overs.
