Beharry spearheads New Amsterdam/Canje to Lennox Allicock T20 title triumph

Anil Beharry produced a fine all-round effort to spur New Amsterdam/ Canje to  a 28-run victory  over Lower Corentyne in the final of the inaugural Lennox Allicock T20 tournament played on Sunday at the Port Mourant Cricket Club ground.

The game, which was reduced to a 15-overs-a-side affair, saw New Amsterdam Canje, batting first, scoring 118 all out from their allotted overs. Beharry was in fine form scoring 26 from 14 balls an innings that included two sixes. Khemraj Sumair, 19, Rudolph Baker, 16 and Charles Sheppard 12, were also among the runs. Former West Indies Under-19 skipper Andre Percival was Lower Corentyne’s main wicket taker with 2 for 21 off two overs. Lower Corentyne in reply, were off to a good start with Percival and Eon Gibson putting on an opening stand of 36 in just six overs but following Percival’s dismissal the innings fell away and Lower Corentyne were all out for 90.

Beharry bagged 3 for 14 from three overs while former national all rounder Hubern  Evans chipped in with 2-8.

Members of the winning team received gold lined trophies and the players from the losing team silver lined trophies. The late Allicock who would have been 64 years old on Sunday was an all round sportsman and sports enthusiast who participated in cricket, football, athletics and table tennis in his hey days as a member of the Port Mourant Sports Club. The event was organized by his son Godwin Allicock.
