The student taught the teacher a boxing lesson and Dilan Allicock and Anson Green earned their first knockout victories in their respective careers on Friday night’s truncated card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Young and upcoming pugilist, Richard Williamson taught his coach Orlan ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers a lesson in the finer arts of boxing using stiff jabs and power punches to earn a lopsided unanimous decision victory over his diminutive tutor.
The talented Williamson, who hones his skills at the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym in Berbice, used his superior speed and skill to land several telling blows to the head and body of Rogers who was relegated to a punching bag as he ate several servings of leather throughout the six-round bantamweight affair.
Even though Rogers enjoyed a few far flung moments in the fight, Williamson’s reach coupled with speed and power in both hands simply overwhelmed his 39-year-old coach.
The judges score cards read 59-56, 59-55 and 50-54 all in favour of Williamson.
After the bout, Williamson stated that there is no bad blood between himself and his coach but it was just a matter of him handling his business as they both are in the same weight division.
Rogers, who sported welts and cuts around both eyes echoed his student’s sentiments and mentioned that he will continue to train the 21-year old who he suffered his 15th defeat against.
Williamson’s record improves to three wins and one loss (disqualification) while Rogers’ record drops to five wins, 15 losses and one no contest.
Green landed a thundering right hand to the jaw of debutant Derick Richmond that sent him crashing to the canvas to earn his second win in his three-fight career.
After three punch -illed rounds between Richmond and Green the end came at two minutes and 45 seconds of the fourth and final round just seconds after Green was deducted a point for holding by referee Dexter Torrington.
Allicock rebounded from a unanimous defeat at the hands of Williamson last July in his debut bout to register a scintillating KO of Charlton Skeete. After Allicock corned the taller Skeete and landed a series of unanswered head and body punches, referee Franklin Brisport wisely put an end to the bout. The time was two minutes and five seconds in the second frame.
The Mark Austin/ Gladwin Dorway junior middleweight title fight which was the card’s headliner had to be canceled as the ring side doctors deemed Dorway medically unfit to take the ring.
It was disclosed that Dorway whose family has a history of heart related problems, heart’s rate was far below the normal rate of a normal adult. His heart rate was recorded at 43 beats per minute where as a normal heart rate would normally read between 60-100 beats per minute.
Meanwhile on the amateur segment of the card, Quincy Boyce (119-124 pounds) John Moore (70-74 pounds), Tyron Lashley (90-94 pounds) and Jaime Kellman (55-59 pounds) all gained victories over their respective opponents.
Both fights were stopped by referee Ramona Agard after two standing eight counts.
In a highly-competitive 55-59 pound slugfest, Kellman defeated Kevon Mulling to earn a two to one decision.
Moore won by a three-nil verdict in his match up with Shaquille Simon as did Moore in his bout with Cordel Walcott. Boyce disposed of David Moore in the first frame of their one sided affair.
At intermission a representative of Courts Guyana Inc, shared out hampers to all eight amateur boxers.
The monthly card is an initiative of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Sport and the National Communication Network (NCN).
