Shiv, Nicolette win NSC sport awards again

Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Nicolette Fernandes have now won more than a dozen national sports awards between them.

The multiple award winners were once again selected as sportsman and sportswoman of the year respectively by the National Sport Commissions (NSC) selection panel yesterday.

Chanderpaul will be receiving the award for the sixth time while Fernandes, who rose to number 32 in the world late last year, will be receiving her seventh such award.

Fernandes competed at the World Women’s Squash Open in Cayman Islands last year and stunned former number one in the world Rachael Grinham.

Fifteen year-old table tennis sensation Chelsea Edghill won the junior sportswoman of the year for the second time in three years while junior Caribbean championships cycling gold medallist Paul De Nobrega won the junior sportsman of the year award.

Winston Stoby was named runner-up sportsman of the year while 2011 sportswoman of the year, Dawn McCammon-Barker  was adjudged runner up this time around for her exploits in the discipline of powerlifting.

Another power-lifter Gumendra Shewdas, was adjudged junior sportsman of the year runner up, while Priyanna Ramdhani and Caribbean under 19 squash champion Mary Fung-A-Fat were named joint junior sportswoman of the year runner-up.

Fung-A-Fat and Fernandes’ coach, Carl Ince was named coach of the year while the national junior squash team which won eight straight Caribbean titles won team of the year.

The Guyana Squash Association was named the most improved association of the year.

Stabroek Sports photographer Orlando Charles won the photographer of the year award while AvenashRamzam won the award for broadcast sports journalists and Calvin Roberts took the  print version of the award. The Guyana Powerlifting Federation was named sports association of the year while Gibran Hussein Sarfaraz received the award for differently abled persons.Peter Abdool, President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control and national swim coach Stephanie Fraser won the awards for male and female sports official of the year.
